About La Mesa Presbyterian Church
La Mesa Presbyterian Church (USA) has been a vital presence in the community for over 60 years. Our members describe it as a caring and friendly home. Historically, one of our purposes has been to facilitate the building of relationships within this community. We are dedicated to the service and support of congregational groups and we provide many fellowship opportunities for the congregation. Location La Mesa began as a mission church in the early 1940s. The church lies in a neighborhood of the same name, about a third of a mile East of the New Mexico State Fairgrounds, a mile and a half from Uptown Albuquerque and a few blocks North of historic Route 66. Worship La Mesa has one Sunday morning worship service in the Reformed tradition, using the lectionary, the Supplemental Liturgical Resources including the Book of Common Worship and the new Psalter. We use the new Presbyterian hymnal and a congregational response to the psalm, with the verses either read by the liturgist or sung by a cantor. Communion is held on the first Sunday of the month during regular worship time. La Mesa has a strong music program led by an excellent Director of Music, David Poole and Organist, Stephen Montoya. Both have advanced degrees in music. Bonnie Husler, who has a degree in music education, is the Hand Bell Choir Director. Education Church School programs begin for children at age three and continue on through high school using the "Whole People of God" with Presbyterian Supplement curriculum published by LOGOS Productions, Inc. There are multiple offerings for adults including Bible study, world issues and personal growth. Youth confirmation classes are provided using the "Journeys of Faith" confirmation curriculum. Church Government: La Mesa Presbyterian Church is guided by the Session which is composed of ordained elders who have been prayerfully called by God and have been elected by the church membership. Church committees are chaired by an active elder and consist of members from both the Session and the congregation. The Connectional Church Many members of La Mesa have been and continue to be deeply involved in Presbytery and Synod activities as well as with the major issues facing our immediate neighborhood and community. Some examples of our immersion in the life of the community are: partnership with La Mesa Elementary School, an annual Thanksgiving Feast of Hope, and an annual Street Festival. La Mesa has united with The Synod of the Southwest and the Presbytery of Santa Fe to create a Native American ministry which is being developed.
