                  MINISTRY WITH URBAN NATIVE AMERICANS

The urban Native American ministry is a joint effort between the La Mesa Presbyterian Church and the Presbytery of Santa Fe.  Rev Judith Wellington was hired as the Associate Pastor for this ministry in October, 2006 and is working to establish trust and build relationships across tribal lines.  It is our hope that this ministry will enable Native Americans to express unmet spiritual needs and to form spiritual communities to meet those needs in the context of an urban reality.

The first year of this developing ministry has involved meeting with Native Americans throughout Albuquerque and the surrounding pueblos who may have an interest.  Together we will be exploring ways of being God's people in the city without giving up our tribal identities and cultures.  In the second year, we hope to have a core group of leaders for this ministry to begin providing direction.

The story of this particular urban Native American ministry began approximately seven years ago, and it is the story of a slow, prayerful process, subject to God's timing and shaping. It will continue to be such an endeavor as we seek to be faithful to our calling in Christ.
